Understanding it

Surgery fixes the structure; rehab helps you use it again. After orthopaedic surgery or a fracture, the joint and surrounding muscles are often stiff and weak. Physiotherapy guides you through each stage of healing so you regain movement safely.

We always follow your surgeon's protocol and restrictions. Please bring your discharge summary, operation notes and any instructions you were given.

What we commonly see

  • Knee replacement (TKR)Bending and straightening the knee, walking and stairs after surgery.
  • ACL & ligament reconstructionStaged rehab from early movement to strength and return to activity.
  • FracturesRestoring movement and strength after the plaster or fixation, once your doctor allows.
  • Hip and shoulder surgeryMovement and strength rehab as per the surgeon's plan.
  • Spine surgeryGraded return to activity after your surgeon clears you for rehab.
Is it time?

Signs physiotherapy may help

  • Your surgeon has advised physiotherapy
  • Stiffness or weakness after a plaster is removed
  • Difficulty walking, using stairs or lifting the arm after surgery
  • You want guidance on what is safe at each stage

See a doctor first if you have

  • Increasing redness, heat, discharge or fever around the wound
  • Calf pain and swelling or sudden breathlessness — seek medical care urgently
  • Sudden increase in pain or a new deformity

If any of these apply, please get medical advice before starting physiotherapy. We are happy to work alongside your doctor.

Questions

Good to know

How soon after surgery should I start physiotherapy?

Your surgeon decides this. Many operations involve some movement from the first days, while others need a period of protection. Bring your discharge papers and we will follow the plan.

Is it normal to have pain during rehab after knee replacement?

Some discomfort during exercises is common after a knee replacement. We adjust the exercises so they are challenging but manageable, and tell you which symptoms should be checked by your surgeon.
