Understanding it

Dry needling uses very thin, sterile, single-use needles placed into tight bands or “trigger points” in a muscle. It is different from acupuncture in its reasoning, and is used to help reduce muscle tightness and pain so that you can move and exercise more comfortably.

Kinesio taping uses a stretchy tape applied to the skin to give support and comfort during recovery — for example to an ankle, knee, shoulder or back. Neither technique is a stand-alone treatment; they work best combined with exercise and hands-on therapy.

What we commonly see

  • Muscle knots & trigger pointsTight, tender spots in the neck, shoulders, back or legs.
  • Muscle-related back and neck painAs part of a wider treatment plan.
  • Sports and overuse strainsCalf, hamstring, forearm and shoulder muscle tightness.
  • Support during recoveryTaping for ankle, knee, shoulder or back support while you rebuild strength.
Is it time?

Signs physiotherapy may help

  • Tight, tender knots that refer pain
  • Muscle tightness limiting exercise or movement
  • You need extra support while returning to activity

See a doctor first if you have

  • Tell us if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, have a fear of needles, or have skin problems in the area
  • Tell us about any allergy to adhesive tape

If any of these apply, please get medical advice before starting physiotherapy. We are happy to work alongside your doctor.

Questions

Good to know

Is dry needling painful?

Most people feel a brief twitch or a mild ache in the muscle. Some soreness for a day or so afterwards is common. It is done only if suitable for you, and we explain it before starting.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

Both use thin needles, but dry needling is based on modern muscle and nerve anatomy and targets specific muscle trigger points as part of physiotherapy.

How long does kinesio tape stay on?

Usually a few days, depending on the area and your skin. We will tell you how to care for it and when to remove it.
