Knee pain & arthritis physiotherapy
घुटनों का दर्द · गठिया
Pain on stairs, stiffness in the morning, or a knee that swells after walking? Stronger muscles around the knee can take load off the joint and make everyday walking easier.
Knee osteoarthritis (“gathiya”) is one of the most common reasons for knee pain, especially after 45. The cartilage changes over time, and the knee can become painful, stiff and weak. Exercise-based physiotherapy is widely recommended as a first-line treatment for knee osteoarthritis.
Younger people more often have knee pain from overuse, weak hip and thigh muscles, or a twist that strained a ligament or meniscus. In both cases, a proper assessment tells us what to work on.
What we commonly see
- Knee osteoarthritisPain and stiffness, especially on stairs, squatting or after sitting.
- Pain at the front of the kneeAche around the kneecap with stairs, running or long sitting.
- Ligament & meniscus strainPain, swelling or giving way after a twist or sports injury.
- After knee replacement or arthroscopySee our post-surgery rehab page.
- Weak, stiff kneesDifficulty getting up from the floor or a low chair.
Signs physiotherapy may help
- Knee pain on stairs, squatting or kneeling
- Morning stiffness or stiffness after sitting
- Swelling after walking or standing long
- The knee feels weak or gives way
- Avoiding walks because of knee pain
See a doctor first if you have
- A hot, red, very swollen knee, especially with fever
- You cannot put weight on the leg after an injury
- Calf pain and swelling, particularly after surgery or long travel — see a doctor urgently
If any of these apply, please get medical advice before starting physiotherapy. We are happy to work alongside your doctor.

Can exercise really help knee arthritis?
Yes. Strengthening and staying active are widely recommended for knee osteoarthritis and can help reduce pain and improve function for many people. The exercises need to be suited to your knee, which is why we start with an assessment.
Will physiotherapy avoid knee replacement?
We cannot promise that. For many people physiotherapy helps manage symptoms well, and for some a replacement is still the right choice later. If surgery happens, being stronger beforehand usually helps recovery.
Should I stop walking if my knee hurts?
Not necessarily. Usually it is better to adjust how much you walk than to stop completely. We will help you find a level that your knee tolerates and build up from there.
